“House of Stone” Author Anthony Shadid Dies in Syria
By Charlie Rogers
Today marks the publication of Pulitzer Prize winning foreign correspondent Anthony Shadid's "House of Stone: A Memoir of Home, Family, and a Lost Middle East." Shadid died on February 16 of an apparent asthma attack while on assignment in Syria. He was 43 years old.
For over 20 years, Shadid covered the Middle East for newspapers such as The New York Times and The Washington Post. He was literally a battle-scarred reporter, and had been beaten and shot while on assignment.
"House of Stone" is the tale of the restoration of a house that Shalid inherited in southern Lebanon -- a house built by his grandparents before his family immigrated to Oklahoma. The New York Times called it an "elegiac, heartbreaking memoir."
