Audio Excerpt: Saturday Night Widows, a Love Story
By Kristin Fritz
There's love, and then there's the loss of love. Sometimes, miraculously it seems, there is then love again -- though sometimes this return of love takes an entirely different form. Becky Aikman's story, which she shares in her memoir, Saturday Night Widows, is one such as this. Becky became a widow in her early forties when her husband died of cancer. Understandably, she struggled to find her new place in the world. As a new way of life and identity challenged her, she wasn't sure where to go -- and so she sought company. She found it in the form of five friends, and collectively they called themselves the Saturday Night Widows.
Romantic love is one thing -- and certainly worth celebrating -- but there's something as truly special about the love between friends, especially when those friends prove your support system. When those friendships are grounded in a commonality as severe as widowhood, the bonds are that much stronger.
