In the news this week you'll find with the passing of Mario Cuomo a reason to revisit his memoir Reason to Believe, Patton Oswalt is out with a new memoir, the Roger Ebert documentary "Life Itself" is now airing on CNN, and excerpts from a new Marissa Mayer biography are making the rounds.
On New Year’s Day, NYC lost Mario Cuomo -- 1980s to 1990s New York City mayor, three-term New York Governor, and father of current NY Governor Andrew. A first-generation son of Italian Immigrants, Cuomo embodied a large part of the spirit of the U.S.’s largest city, including voicing his disagreement with Reagan-era policies while in office. For words from the man himself, Reason to Believe is Cuomo’s memoir, published soon after his mayoral tenure. [via the Economist]
Out today, comedian Patton Oswalt’s memoir, Silver Screen Fiend, covers his obsession with the big screen. On the page: film (and films) from the point of view of a yearning fan, a prickly account of people and works he doesn't like, and a truly insightful look at comedy itself. [via NPR]
A documentary on the much-beloved and much-missed film critic Roger Ebert debuted on CNN Films over the weekend. "Life Itself," directed by Steve James and based on Ebert’s memoir by the same name, captures Ebert on-screen with sidekick Gene Siskel, his Pulitzer prize win, his battle with the cancer that ultimately claimed him, his lasting influence on filmmakers like Herzog, Morris, and Scorsese, and perhaps above all, his notion that "movies are a giant machine that generates empathy." Marissa Mayer, Yahoo! CEO and charged with bringing the company up to digital speed, is the subject of a biography out today and excerpted in places like the New York Times Magazine. Business Insider correspondent Nicholas Carlson’s Marissa Mayer and the Fight to Save Yahoo! takes an in-depth look at her struggle to right the brand, with a glimpse of the personality at work: "And two years in, Mayer, who has a tendency to compare herself with Steve Jobs, wasn’t about to abandon her turnaround plan."
