Sofia Coppola to Adapt Alysia Abbott’s Memoir, Fairyland, and More
By Susan H. Gordon
A manuscript titled The Life and Adventures of a Haunted Convict, or the Inmate of a Gloomy Prison -- written in the mid-nineteenth century by an African-American man sentenced to time in the Auburn Correctional Facility in upstate New York -- will be published by Random House as a prison memoir. Austin Reed’s detailed story is an acute portrait of his time, describing both his crimes and the then-standard punishment methods used at the facility -- which would later host the U.S.’s first execution by electric chair. In what could become the very definition of “tell-all,” Lindsay Lohan is shopping her memoir, which is based on notes she made while in rehab. Word is “serious offers” are being made by publishers -- for a book documenting her acting career, nightlife, series of arrests, and her life at home, the actress says. Time will tell if it all makes for a worthy memoir, but one thing’s certain: the spotlight will remain shining on Lohan’s life for at least a little while longer. [via The Independent]
Alysia Abbott’s autobiography, Fairyland: A Memoir of My Father will soon become a film, with Sofia Coppola co-adapting it for the big screen. Abbott’s tale, based on growing up the daughter of poet/activist Steve Abbott, is a look at the many wild lives set in 70s and 80s San Francisco -- one the author sees as particularly suited to Coppola’s talents. “Sofia’s understanding of the feminine perspective” makes her the ideal cinematic translator, says Abbott. David Foster Wallace onscreen? Yes. "The End Of The Tour" will be adapted from Although Of Course You End Up Being Yourself, Rolling Stone writer David Lipsky’s account of five days he spent with DFW on his Infinite Jest book tour. Jason Segel is on board for the lead role, while Jesse Eisenberg will play Lipsky’s part. With a script by the Pulitzer Prize-winning Donald Margulies and James Ponsoldt ("Smashed") in the director’s chair, we’re betting on this project to perfectly capture at least some important parts of the sorely missed author’s life.
