That Summer - Biographile

After a month spent skipping down memory lane, basking in authors' summer stories, Biographile is officially bringing our That Summer series to a close. If you're joining us late in the game, after tans have faded and lawn chairs have been folded, don't sweat it: you've got some good reading ahead of you.

The dozens of authors who joined us this July looked back on all sorts of wild, romantic and surprising summers, all of which impacted their lives in revealing ways. Interested in the joys of driving with the top down? Check out Jojo Moyes's piece on her colorful London neighborhood and the freedom an open road brings. Have a criminal inclination? Margaret Atwood discusses her fascination with stromatolites and -- naturally -- turns an innocent Arctic boat ride into an arena for murder. And if you'd like your heartstrings pulled, read Saroo Brierley's emotional piece on his journey to India to reconnect with his long lost family.

We also hosted a writing contest in tandem with the author series. Partnering with our friends at Paste Magazine, together we've sifted through hundreds of submissions for original nonfiction pieces similarly celebrating the memories of a particular summer. The winner -- "An Otherwise Ordinary Day" by Dina Honour -- was announced Wednesday, and you can read it here.
